Project lights the way home!

This fun and easy lighthouse project does more than add nautical flair to your home port–it actually provides light. A perfect beacon for a porch or walkway, it's designed to be topped with a solar-powered path light, so there are no wires to install or energy bills to pay.

The lighthouse is also inexpensive to build. Required materials include a single sheet of plywood, wooden pegs, paint and a solar-powered outdoor light (available here or at most home and garden centres).

The project includes full-size traceable patterns (for curves and angles) and utilizes modular construction for simplicity. To build, assemble the base, tower and top separately and paint. When the paint's dry, stack the components and fasten together with screws. To finish, place the solar-powered light in a hole on top and secure with screws.

The lighthouse stands about 5 feet tall and is 22 inches in diameter at the base.

This plan includes complete step-by-step directions with photos, full-size traceable patterns, construction diagrams, a materials list and cutting schedule and a toll-free help line for project questions. The plan also includes a color chart and painting key for the color scheme pictured, or the paint can be customized to suit the builder.
