Making Vacuum.
There's two ways of making vacuum. Use a pump (similar to an air compressor)
or use a Venturi. This vacuum generator is a venturi.
How does it work?
In the simplest terms, air supplied by your air compressor is blown at a
high speed through a funnel shaped opening inside the body of the generator. As
it passes through that opening, it pulls air from around the funnel with it. By
tapping into this area of the funnel with a fitting fastened into the side of
the generator, we can take advantage of that "pull". Connect a jig,
fixture or heavy bag to this fitting with a stiff hose and you have the power
vacuum at your control.
How much vacuum does it pull?
It doesn't sound like much when I say controlled vacuum generates the
equivalent to 10 pounds per square inch (PSI) of clamping pressure but... it's
how you use that controlled vacuum that will amaze you. Consider this. 10 PSI of
clamping pressure on a 5" x 5" jig means that jig is held by a 250
pound clamping force. Now think about using a plastic vacuum bag. The really big
ones allow you to veneer a 4' x 8' sheet. At 10 PSI, using this little vacuum
generator, you can put 46,080 pounds of clamping force on that 4' x 8' sheet.
What can I do with vacuum?
You can use the power of vacuum in may ways. We can all understand the
plastic bag idea but don't limit yourself to a bag. Try making a jig using sheet
material like melamine or sealed plywood. Stick a closed cell tape (weather stripping) around the edge creating a closed area for the vacuum. Connect your vacuum supply into the area by drilling a hole through from the opposite side. You can also drill in through the edge of the board and then drill an intersecting hole. Either way,
connect your vacuum hose to this hole. Place your project on the tape area covering the tape completely. Turn on the vacuum. Magically the project is held to the jig.
With a little imagination, you will realize how handy vacuum is.
