Ornamental spindles have been around for generations. This 3 ball spindle is likely the most popular of all seen in screen doors, across the top of doorways, in the doors themselves and in shelf brackets. Furniture had them too. They were used under the arms of wooden chairs and to ornament furniture such as old style desks or between double pedestals of tables.

This spindle is 5-3/4" long and when installed, 5" is visible. The dowel ends are 3/8" diameter so drill 3/8" holes to mount them. They are nicely turned in birch wood. You'll enjoy using them and you'll definitely enjoy the finished project.
